How Three Stick-On Lights Solved the One Thing I Hated About My Closet

For twenty-one years, the one thing I hated about my closet was not the size and not the mess. It was the dark. The closet in our 1972 split-level has one overhead bulb in the middle of the ceiling, and the shelves on either side stay in shadow no matter the time of day. I have lived in this house for 21 years, and for most of those years I just reached in and hoped. I cannot give you a precise number of weeks because I have not replaced them yet. That is the honest answer. I expected to be changing batteries by now, and I am not. I have had them up since early spring, and we are well into fall.

The brightness is what sold me. The package talks about lumens, but lumens never meant anything to me. What I can tell you is this: with the closet door closed and the light on, I can read the tag on a shirt from the doorway. I can tell the navy shirt from the black one without pulling it off the hanger. That is the test that matters.

I have also found uses beyond the closet. There is one in the hallway near the basement steps, so nobody trips on the way down for game night. I do the lights for our block's trick-or-treat walk every October, and I have thought about borrowing these for that, too. But the closet is where they earned their place.

The only thing I would change is the number of lights. Three is enough for a closet, but I have already thought about putting one in the pantry and one in the cabinet under the bathroom sink. The adhesive and the motion sensor do the same job everywhere.
